Leaker claims second-generation AirPods will be discontinued this month as new model expected

The third-generation AirPods are reportedly “ready to ship” according to Apple leaker Kang, who has previously been accurate in the past with details about iPhone 12 models, fourth-generation iPad Air and other products.

Apple has been working new AirPods models that use a smaller design with force touch, similar to the AirPods Pro. These could have removable in-ear tips but aren’t expected to support Active Noise Cancellation or Transparency Mode. They’ll also sport a redesigned case which will be smaller than the current model.

Leaked images claim to show the new design, which is very similar to the Pro models. It appears that Apple will no longer sell AirPods with the touch gestures or longer stem, which some customers found more comfortable in their ears.

Kang claims that the second-generation AirPods, released in early 2019, will be discontinued this month and replaced with the new model. Kang previously suggested that Apple will hold an event on March 23rd, where updated AirPods, iPad Pro models and AirTags will be announced. The company hasn’t yet sent out invites to a March event.
