The Indian government has banned nearly 60 of the most popular Chinese-made apps from being available in the country. Citing security and privacy concerns, apps such as TikTok, WeChat and Weibo will no longer be accessible in India.
The government said that “in view of the emergent nature of threats”, 59 apps have been blocked “since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India”.
The hosting websites will also be blocked. It looks like this could take a massive amount of users of the Chinese-produced apps, with, for example, 611 million downloads of TikTok coming from India alone.
