Users who have tried updating to macOS Big Sur on their older Late 2013 and mid-2014 13-inch MacBook Pro are running into major issues and are reporting that the update is bricking their machine.
This is according to users on Reddit and Apple Support Communities, who say that during the upgrade to macOS Big Sur, a black screen appears. NVRAM, safe mode SMC and internet recovery key shortcuts aren’t accessible, leaving no logical way to bypass the frozen update process.
Apple is reportedly looking into the issues, with one representive saying the problems have been escalated to Apple’s engineering team. Some people have been told to book their MacBook Pro into repair.
It’s important to note that these issues are mainly affecting late-2013 and mid-2014 MacBook Pro models, which are the oldest machines that macOS Big Sur supports. Until a fix is released, we’d advise holding off the upgrade if you have an affected model.
