Apple releases new versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and HomePod to developers

Apple had released new versions of all of their software to developers just one day after a public release of the major updates. The new versions are:

  • iOS 14.2 Beta 1
  • iPadOS 14.2 Beta
  • tvOS 14.2 Beta 1
  • macOS Big Sur Beta 7
  • watchOS 7.1 Beta 1
  • HomePod software 14.2 Beta 1

The iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS updates are notable because versions 14.1 haven’t been released yet. We’ve selected some highlights from the release notes, which are available below.

macOS Big Sur Beta 7

  • Installer and Software Update, Resolved: You can now update macOS Big Sur 11 beta 7, if Secure Boot is set to No Security.
  • Kernel, Resolved: Third-party driver extensions now run after restarting your Mac.
  • Kernel, Resolved: DriverKit extensions now function as expected.
  • Spotlight, Resolved: You can now find an application using Spotlight without an initial launch using Finder. 
  • SwiftUI, Many New Features and Resolutions
  • Xcode, Resolved: You’re now able to launch Mac Catalyst and iOS apps using Xcode.

watchOS 7.1 Beta 1

  • Apple Pay, Known Issue: Apple Cash Family isn’t currently available. 
  • Clock, Known Issue: Watch faces, complications, and colors introduced in watchOS 7 aren’t currently available in watchOS 7.1 beta.
  • Health, Known Issue: The Blood Oxygen feature isn’t currently available.
  • Messages, Known Issue: You currently can’t use Siri to send audio messages.

iOS and iPadOS 14.2 Beta 1

  • General, Known Issue: iPad (8th Generation) isn’t currently supported in iOS & iPadOS 14.2 beta. Support will be added next week.
  • General, Known Issue: Apps built with the iOS 14 SDK that import SwiftUI and StoreKit in the same file will crash on launch. Attempting to build with the iOS 14.2 SDK will result in an error.
  • Apple Pay, Known Issue: Apple Cash Family isn’t currently available in iOS & iPadOS 14.2 beta. 
  • Messages, Known Issue: You currently can’t use Siri to send audio messages. 
  • Networking, Known Issue: Your app might quit unexpectedly if it uses ASIHTTPRequest

tvOS 14.2 Beta 1

No release notes. However, it appears new aerial screensavers of Big Sur have been added.
