Apple has announced the next version of macOS at its annual WWDC conference today. macOS Big Sur comes with a major design overhaul and version change, making it the first update for macOS 11.
macOS Big Sur features a major UI overhaul with more consistent iOS-style app icons and interface elements. The menu bar has been redesigned with more translucency, redesigned dropdown menus and support for Control Center. You can customise Control Center and drag tools to the menu bar.
An updated Notification Center combines widgets and notifications, with support for the new widgets introduced with iOS and iPadOS 14. All core Apple apps have been redesigned, and the iWork suite gets a brand new look too.
Safari is now 50% faster than Google Chrome, offers better tab management, in-depth privacy features, including a Privacy Report tool and Apple has made it more customisable with a revamped start page. It also takes on a new UI, similar to the iPad’s interface.
Messages has been revamped from the ground up with Catalyst. Building on the iOS 14 features, the Mac version now supports Memoji and Memoji Stickers (you can create and edit your own), Message Effects and the ability to pin conversations to the top of your message list.
