Apple announces iPhone 12 with A14, MagSafe, new design and more

Apple has announced the iPhone 12 with an all-new design, A14 Bionic processor, MagSafe, dual-lens rear camera system and much more. The iPhone 12 will start at $799 with 128GB of storage and will be available to order on Friday.

The iPhone 12 has a flat-edge industrial design with thinner bezels and notch, housing the TrueDepth camera system. It’s available in five colours – white, black, red, green and blue and has an aluminium frame like the iPhone 11.

The A14 Bionic uses a new 5nm technology to deliver 50% faster performance than any other smartphone and 50% faster graphics power with a new four-core GPU. A 16-core Neural Engine provides 80% faster performance over the Apple A13.

Apple boasts that the iPhone 12 is 15% smaller in volume, 11% thinner and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11. It has a Super Retina XDR OLED display with 2x as many pixels as its predecessor, up to 1200 nits brightness and support for Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and HLG.

All new iPhones are 5G-compatible with a new antenna system that can provide up to 3.5Gbps download speeds. iOS has also been optimised to support 5G, with a Smart Data mode that can switch between 5G and LTE speeds when you need them.

A Ceramic Shield finish on the iPhone 12 provides 4x better drop performance and is more durable than glass. Apple claims it’s tougher than any smartphone glass yet.

iPhone 12 has a new 12MP Wide camera with faster f/1.6 aperture and 7-element lens. Night Mode now works on all cameras, including the front TrueDepth and performs up to 27% better in low light conditions.

iPhone 12 also has MagSafe, Apple’s new wireless charging technology that can charge up to 15W. This allows accessories such as the MagSafe Duo Charge and Leather Wallet to attach via magnets on the rear of the iPhone. Third-party manufacturers will also be releasing their own accessories.
