UFC Fight Pass app stops working on Apple TV third-generation

The martial arts UFC channel is to drop support for older-generation Apple TV hardware. This includes the third-generation Apple TV, which was released in 2012 and is eight years old.

Users are now met with a message advising them to purchase a newer Apple TV or use the UFC app on a different streaming device, such as an Amazon Fire Stick or Roku Stick.

Apple TV 3 does not run tvOS or have an App Store, meaning it’s limited in content provided by a select number of providers, many of whom are now dropping support for the box entirely. The Apple TV fourth-generation and 4K Apple TV are now being sold by Apple and will likely be replaced with a newer model imminently.

These boxes can run tvOS which allows an unlimited number of apps and games from the App Store, Apple Arcade and other Apple services, and AirPlay 2. They will continue to receive software updates for the next few years. The third-generation Apple TV is now obsolete, but did receive a security update with iOS 8.4.3.
