As previously speculated and now confirmed, Apple is working on a Car Key feature for iOS 14. The screenshots below show an example of what the feature will look like with a BMW i8, likely in the Wallet app.
From these screenshots, it also appears that you’ll be able to invite people to share your car key with, and also shows an “Express Mode,” which allows you to unlock your car automatically without needing Face ID/password confirmation.
This feature is similar to Apple’s Express Transit Card for Apple Pay, which allows you to pay at select transit terminals by holding your phone near the reader without needing Face ID or password confirmation.
Tesla, among some other carmakers for select models, also allow users to unlock their cars with their phones, but this is the first time we’ll be seeing a “one-for-all” service. Overall, this is a very exciting (and innovative!) feature and we can’t wait to see what else is to come in iOS 14.
